Metallica has announced that it is auctioning off an autographed, customized guitar to help raise money for the people of Haiti. According to Noisecreep, the band posted a message online saying, "(Metallica) have partnered with charitybuzz.com to auction a signed and personalized ESP Ltd. Viper guitar. The axe, which boasts a high-gloss, redwood grain finish and custom ESP pick ups, will be signed by all four band members. But beyond the John Hancocks, drummer Lars Ulrichwill also customize the autograph with whatever the winning bidder likes -- be it his or her name, favorite Metallica song or otherwise."

• Bidding for the guitar, which is valued at $10,000, will begin on February 1st.
• The auction will raise funds for J/P Haitian Relief Organization, a nonprofit founded by actor/director Sean Pennto rebuild the infrastructure destroyed by the earthquake and combat the poverty that the majority of Haitians are facing.
• Metallica is currently working on its 10th studio album, with Ulrich recently telling Rolling Stonethat the band is "seven, eight songs" into the writing process.
• Guitarist Kirk Hammettdescribed the upcoming disc as a "heavier 'black album,' referring to the group's breakout 1991 self-titled effort.
• Metallica will perform the 'black album' from front to back this summer at selected European festivals, including a headlining appearance at England's Download Festival in early June.
