Ryan lived life to the absolute fullest, accomplishing more than most people in their entire lives in just 36 years.

One of his favorite quotes:

"The only people that truly understand life on the edge are those that go over it."

Christopher Ryan Melton A . K . A .  Johnny Strange
Feb 20, 1974-Feb 21, 2010

AM - FM, GulfStar, Clear Channel jock for 15 years.  KZII-FM Lubbock, TX Nights (as Cruz), KEYJ-FM Abilene, TX Nights, KBRQ-FM Waco, TX Mornings, KLFX-FM Mornings/Programming Director.  Actor, Writer, Director. Studied acting in SF, CA and appeared in several TV shows and movies including "Idiocracy", "A Scanner Darkly'', and upcoming "Tree of Life".  He was working to finish a feature film that he wrote and directed in the last few years called "Strange Radio''. Ryan was an avid sports fan. He loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Tech Red Raiders!

Ryan suffered from Charcot-Marie-Tooth, or CMT, which is the most commonly inherited neurological disorder and is found world-wide in all races and ethnic groups. Discovered in 1886 by three physicians, Jean-Martin-Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth, CMT affects an estimated 2.6 million people.
CMT patients slowly lose normal use of their feet/legs and hands/arms as nerves to the extremities degenerate and the muscles in the extremities become weakened because of the loss of stimulation by the affected nerves. Many patients also have some loss of sensory nerve function.

CMT is one of the 40 diseases covered by the MDA, but unlike muscular dystrophy, in which the defect is in the muscles, CMT is a disorder in which the defect is in the nerves that control the muscles.  Ryan was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie Tooth Syndrome in his teens, and really began to suffer the effects in his early 20's. Luckily he was able to play sports like golf and tennis, and was even able to run early on in his life, before he and his family noticed something wasn't right with his legs, hands, and feet as he began to have problems with normal functions like buttoning a shirt. CMT is not normally a life threatening disease, but in March of this year, Ryan had become extremely weak in his fight with CMT and had begun to get around with the help of a wheelchair. After taking in a Texas Tech Red Raider basketball game (his favorite college team), he felt ill and was taken to the hospital with severe stomach pains and found out his intestines had shut down. Ryan fought extremely hard with family and friends constantly by his side at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock for over a month, and lost his battle the day after his 36th birthday.

He was extremely respected by his peers at Clear Channel and by his many friends for his overwhelming talent and strength, and had the undying love of a very supportive family throughout his entire life.

Ryan's fight is not yet over though, as his beloved nephew Karsen also currently suffers from a form of Muscular Dystrophy called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Ryan was a big supporter of helping with MDA, not only because of his own disease, but mostly to help others, including and especially his nephew with their fight.

STRANGE THOUGHT

American Idol is glorified karaoke, based on a premise to impress, which no legit artist tries to do. Real artists try to relate and express, they go through way more hardships than waiting in line at a mall to do a overehearsed cover.
